MLK Day of Service 1/19/09

Dear Friend,

As you may know, each year Philadelphia Black Gay Pride (PBGP) spearheads a Day of Service among Philadelphia based LGBT organizations, our allies and supporters.  Over the past couple years we have focused this volunteer effort on individuals and families affected by homelessness. We have been so thankful for all our past partners and sponsors, in particular The Keven Parker Company who has generously donated all the food for our Day of Service feeding the homeless events.  Read more below.

Today, as we know, more and more families are living below poverty and/or experiencing homelessness due to the unfortunate economic lows our country has been experiencing.  For this reason, it is critically important for those of us who have been blessed to keep a roof over our head and have our basic necessities met, to remember those who have not been as fortunate.

Often times around this time of year, you receive request from non-profit organizations like PBGP asking you to donate money for their programming.  While we certainly welcome any contributions to our organization and our partner organizations, I am writing today to ask for you help in our “Operation Hope” effort to adopt a family in need for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. As in past years this activity will be registered with the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, home of the “Official Day of Service”.

PBGP is working with the City of Philadelphia’s, Office of Adult Services to identify a family in need of support as they transition from homelessness.  Our goal for “Operation Hope” is to raise $750 - $1,000 by January 16, 2009. We will then purchase two gift cards in equal amounts to be used for food and clothing for one family in need.

To simplify this request, all you will need to do is respond to this message with the amount you will be contributing and I will personally make arrangements with you to pick up your check or money order, made payable to Philadelphia Black Gay Pride. It’s that simple! After the presentation is made to the family on the 19th, PBGP will notify you and share a picture of the presentation to the family with you.

Many of you I know personally and I know your hearts, minds and spirits. You understand the importance of helping. Mahatma Gandhi said it best, “you have to be the change you want to see in the world”.

I look forward to hearing from you!

In the Spirit,

Chris Alston
